ASHRAE Qatar Oryx Chapter Holds Technical Seminar
The Qatar Oryx Chapter of ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) held a Seminar on 12 November 2024, for the Engineering community in Qatar at the Meeting Hall of FTC Qatar, attended by about 55 Engineering Professionals in person and 20 persons online.
The Subject of the Seminar was “Achieving Chartered Engineer (CEng) and European Engineer (EUR ING) for Practicing HVAC Engineers”. Michael Serben (CEng, EUR ING) was the Keynote speaker who kept the all the attendees focused throughout the session and answered all the queries at the end of the presentation. He has over 27 years’ mechanical engineering experiences with specialization in HVAC Systems Design for Oil and Gas applications and has obtained the titles Chartered Engineer, CEng awarded by Engineering Council of United Kingdom on 28 March 2024 and EUR ING awarded by Engineers Europe in 7 October 2024.
Michael elaborated on the importance of advance level engineering in the modern era of engineering practice and how it will provide hopeful aspiration to practicing HVAC Engineers in the Middle East Gulf region. He demonstrated to the audience, as to how the title is awarded to those who deserved and showcased the minimum requirements stated in the United Kingdom Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). He also added that Practicing HVAC engineers with equivalent formal studies in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in HVAC are now given a chance to be listed as Chartered Engineer in Engineering Council (UK) through an alternative route called ‘Technical Report Route’ via assistance from Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineer (CIBSE). The topic of presentations initializes with Advance Level Engineering, International Professional Engineer (Int.PE) being the pinnacle (Level 8), Chartered Engineer (CEng) ranked in level 7. Discussion covers joining a Licensee Organization and explaining their roles and contributions on how helpful the licensee in achieving the title Chartered engineer. The Speaker also discussed the five (5) competency criteria in-line with UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competency and Commitment which are essentials in Engineering Practice Report completion. EPR is a prerequisite to become member of the licensee organization, Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) a counterpart of ASHRAE International. Speaker also tackled the alternative route for Chartered engineer endeavor, provided hints and tips in preparing Engineering Practice Report, synopsis for the technical report and actual interviews. A touch-based discussion was also inspired the ASHRAE Qatar Oryx members in achieving European Engineer (EUR ING) recognition which is an extension of the mobility for all Chartered Engineer in UK.
Question and Answer was also conducted during the seminar. The Seminar ended and concluded with hopeful extension for an Engineering Practice Report Workshop which will be scheduled by ASHRAE Qatar Oryx in the future.
